After a long winter of cozy sweaters, it’s time to break out the airy, light boho crochet sweater I’m introducing today, the Melanie Sweater.

I just love a good, breezy and open top like this. And it is so simple to create big impact like this lacey motif just by skipping stitches. Love love, win win.

I had a lot of Bernat Baby Sport left over from my Davisville Houndstooth Scarf, and I absolutely love working with 3wt yarns (they’re for sure my fave!) so I used it again to make this sweater that I know will be worn much throughout this spring, summer and fall.

The construction on this sweater is a little different for me – it’s sideways so as to create the motifs the way they are. As such, this crochet boho top is made from sleeve end to sleeve end as one piece and then seamed from sleeve cuff down to side hem. Easy peasy.

I can’t wait to bring more light-weight makes to you this spring and summer and I hope you fall in love with the Melanie Sweater as much as I have! For more light-weight makes, take a look at my Ellis Summer Top, my Wenonah Filet Top and my Mana Halter Top.

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– For this Melanie Boho Crochet Sweater, you must have knowledge of: working in the BB of the foundation chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, chaining spaces, adding and removing width from the piece (with foundation chains).
– This boho crochet top is made as one piece worked side-to-side from sleeve cuff to sleeve cuff.
– The stitch design used to create the hole motifs is comprised of DC’s with skipped stitches and chains. – The motifs are 27 ST’s along the sleeve and shoulders, 8 ST’s around the neck hole and and 16 ST on the bottom hem.  I will refer to them in the pattern as follows: SSM (sleeve & shouder motif), NM (neck hole motif) HM (hem motif) and their charts are as follows (these follow the same pattern across the sweater, so it’s easy to just follow what you’ve done the row before… please also remember that the hem motif and the neck hole motif will be reversed on odd an even rows):
– This boho crochet sweater can be customized in terms of length by adjusting your chain count for the main body of the sweater.
– The pattern for this filet crochet heart sweater is given for XS with all respective counts given in parentheses ( ) after the XS count. – Turning CH’s do NOT count as stitches. – The stitch count is given in parentheses ( ) at the end of each row.

(depending on whether you’re working back or forth, this could be reversed – the CH 2 is near the bottom of the hem, the CH 5 is at the top of the hem – it is forward or backward, regular or reversed):

4XL: Repeat until row 18, CH 3 & turn

5XL: Repeat until row 20, CH 3 & turn

*We will now be working this portion of the front and back separately to create the neck hole, and then joining them back up again as one long row after the neck hole.  It really doesn’t matter which is the front and which is the back, but for the purposes of this pattern, let’s call the side you started on the front of the sweater. The neck hole is created by omitting the CH 5/SK ST portion in the middle of the SSM and then picking it back up again on the other side.  All sizes have the same number of rows for the neck hole – 14 rows.*

MELANIE BOHO CROCHET SWEATER — 1st SIDE NECK HOLE:

1st Side Neck Hole Row 1: Starting in the 1st ST from the hook, DC x 3 then HM then DC to your NM but ONLY COMPLETE TO THE 3 X DC just before the 5 x CH’s – the neck hole will be created by the absence of the 5 x CH’s, CH 3 & turn (62,62,71,71,79,79,90,90,90)

1stSide Neck Hole Row 2: Starting in the 1st ST from the hook, DC x 3 then NM then DC to your HM complete HM then DC x 3, CH 3 & turn (62,62,71,71,79,79,90,90,90)

1st Side Neck Hole Row 3 to 13: Repeat Row 2 in forward or reverse until 13 rows for all sizes, DO NOT CH & TURN – instead YO, pull through and tie off/cut.  You will continue across row 14 from the other side. (62,62,71,71,79,79,90,90,90)

**Tie on at the NECK HOLE for the 2nd Side Neck Hole Rows so we can continue.

MELANIE BOHO CROCHET TOP – 2ND SIDE NECK HOLE:

2ND Side Neck Hole Rows 1 to 13: Repeat “1st Side Neck Hole Row 2” in forward or reverse and at the end of Row 13, CH 3 & turn (62,62,71,71,79,79,90,90,90)

2nd Side Neck Hole Row 14: Starting in the 1st ST from the hook, DC x 3 then HM then DC to the SSM and do a complete SSM with the CH 5 across the neck hole area to close it up and start our continued shoulder as well.  Once the SSM is fully complete, continue DC until the HM and complete HM then DC x 3, CH 3 & turn (123,123,135,135,147,147,163,163,163)

2nd Side Body Row 1: Starting in the 1st ST from the hook, DC x 3 then HM then DC to your SSM and complete SSM then DC to your HM and complete HM then DC x 3, CH 3 & turn (123,123,135,135,147,147,163,163,163)

2nd Side Body Side Row 3 to 6: Repeat “1st Side Body Row 2” in forward or reverse for the following number of rows and then we will tie off and tie back on to complete the last sleeve.

XS: Pause at row 6 & tie off

S: Repeat until row 7 & tie off

M: Repeat until row 10 & tie off

L: Repeat until row 11 & tie off

XL: Repeat until row 13 & tie off

2XL: Repeat until row 15 & tie off

3XL: Repeat until row 16 & tie off

4XL: Repeat until row 18 & tie off

5XL: Repeat until row 20 & tie off

** Turn your work over & TIE ON for the last sleeve at your respective stitch – it’s easy to find the stitch to tie on to because it will match up with your other sleeve by counting out the appropriate number of stitches from the last ‘hole’[3 (3,3,6,6,8,8,11,11,11)].**

MELANIE BOHO CROCHET SWEATER – 2ND SIDE SLEEVE:

2nd Sleeve Row 1: Starting in the same stitch you did you CH 3 in, DC [3 (3,3,6,6,8,8,11,11,11)] then do SSM then DC [3 (3,3,6,6,8,8,11,11,11)], CH 3 & turn (33,33,39,39,43,43,49,49,49)

2nd Sleeve Row 2: Starting in the 1st ST from the turning CH, DC [3 (3,6,6,88,11,11,11)] then do SSM then DC [3 (3,6,6,88,11,11,11)], CH 3 & turn (33,33,39,39,43,43,49,49,49)

2nd Sleeve Row 3 to 26: Repeat “1st Sleeve Row 2” for the following number of rows

XS & S: Pause at row 26 and tie off

M & L: Repeat until row 28 then tie off

XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL & 5XL: Repeat until row 30 then tie off

MELANIE BOHO CROCHET TOP – FINISHING TOUCHES:

– With the RIGHT side facing out, tie on at the middle back of the neck hole and SC around (placing 5 SC around the CH 5’s at either side of the neck hole) – do not join, continue in a spiral and do another round of SL ST all the way around and when you get back to the 1st ST, tie off. (I usually do this by taking my hook out of my working loop, pushing it through the 1st ST in the round from back to front, picking my working loop back up and pulling it through then tying off in the back)

– With the RIGHT side facing out, tie on at the seam of each sleeve and SC around each ST – do not join, continue in a spiral and do another round of SL ST all the way around and when you get back to the 1st ST, tie off. (I usually do this by taking my hook out of my working loop, pushing it through the 1st ST in the round from back to front, picking my working loop back up and pulling it through then tying off in the back) – REPEAT FOR BOTH SLEEVES

– With the RIGHT side facing out, tie on at one of the side seams of the bottom hem and SC around each ST – do not join, continue in a spiral and do another round of SL ST all the way around and when you get back to the 1st ST, tie off (I usually do this by taking my hook out of my working loop, pushing it through the 1st ST in the round from back to front, picking my working loop back up and pulling it through then tying off in the back)
