I am loving some of the nicer weather we’re getting these days and it’s the perfect chance to wear this lightweight, very sophisticated Davisville Crochet Houndstooth Scarf. It may be a super scarf, but the 3wt yarn keeps it light and airy.

Have you every tried houndstooth before? If you have, you know how easy it is. If you haven’t, you’ll be amazed and shocked at how such an easy stitch, alternating colors in your rows, can create this beautiful pattern and texture. Traditionally, a houndstooth is created with black and white, but I wanted to do something a little different and something a little more subtle. As such, I chose a white and a taupe which compliment each other. The added bonus is that this scarf will go with absolutely anything!

You can easily customize this houndstooth super scarf in terms of both length and width and instructions for doing so are in the notes section of the pattern. You can also go for a tassel fringe or a fringe which is a little more sparse than mine. The options are open!

I’m looking forward to wearing this often this spring. I hope you make it and enjoy it too!

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– For this Davisville Crochet Houndstooth Scarf, you must have knowledge of: working in the BB of the foundation chain, single crochet, double crochet and changing colors at the end of a row.
– This houndstooth super scarf is made as one piece worked length-wise (side-to-side).
– The Lemon Peel Stitch used here is simply made by alternating SC and DC across a row.
– In the case of this scarf, ODD ROWS start and end with a SC and EVEN ROWS start and end with a DC.
– Each row changes color.  This change happens at the end of the previous row by switching your yarn color in the last pull-through of the last stitch.
– When you change color at the end of a row, you can leave a 5” tail and this can be included/worked in to the fringe at the end.  It knotted my tails together for security but you don’t have to do so.
– This crochet houndstooth scarf is LONG but the length can be adjusted if need be, by chaining less, you just have to make sure you keep the starting chain as an ODD number.  You can also adjust the width of the scarf by adding or subtracting rows, you just need to make sure you start and end the scarf on a row of the same colors.
– Turning CH’s do NOT count as stitches.
– The stitch count is given in parentheses ( ) at the end of each row.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS HOUNDSTOOTH SUPER SCARF:

DAVISVILLE CROCHET HOUNDSTOOTH SCARF:

Using Color A (white), CH 301 + 1 to turn

Row 1: Working in the BB of each CH, start with a SC in the first CH from the hook and alternate SC/DC across the row ending on a SC in the last BB (but DO NOT complete this SC, work it so you have 2 loops on the hook then pull through Color B for the color change), CH 1 & turn (301)

Row 2: Using Color B and starting in the 1st ST from the turning CH, alternate DC/SC across the row ending on a DC in the last ST (but change back to Color A in the last step of the last ST), CH 1 & turn (301)

Row 3: Using Color A and starting in the 1st ST from the turning CH, alternate SC/DC across the row ending on a SC in the last ST (but change back to color B in the last step of the last ST), CH 1 & turn (301)

Rows 4 to 35: Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until you reach 35 rows.  In the last ST of Row 35, do not change colors, just complete the SC, YO, pull through and tie off (301)

FRINGE FOR HOUNDSTOOTH SUPER SCARF:

– Lay your scarf with the right side facing you at the end.  We will place our fringe in the end of every row that is Color A (in this case, white)

– Find a book of about 5.5” in width.

– Holding a strand each of Color A & Color B in your hand, wind the yarn around the width of the book 4 times and cut yarn.

– Keeping your finger in the fold of the yarn you removed, cut the bottom fold so that you have 8 strands of yarn on your finger, folded in half.

– Using a large crochet hook (I think I used a 6 or 7, just enough to grab all 8 strands of yarn) pull the folded fringe through a Color A row from FRONT to BACK then pull the fringe end through that loop and tighten.  I also placed the 2 tails from each color change through these fringe loops before I tightened to hide them in amongst the fringe.

– Repeat this for all Color A (white) rows on each end of the scarf.VOILA, a sophisticated crochet houndstooth scarf that is a casual favorite!
