“Laurentian” Oversized Crochet Cardi

As you can imagine, there has been a lot of time spent in the house the last few weeks. And while one would think that means plenty of time for crocheting, it’s actually meant a little less time simply due to having all the children around all the time. BUT… I have managed to design this oversized crochet cardi I’ve been wanting to make for a while.

The oversized crochet cardi is a hot ticket right now and this one is really versatile. And really truly pretty easy to make. I chose to leave it open without closures but you could easily add buttons or a waist tie to make it all your own.

The yarn is a sport weight 3wt yarn so that it’s not too bulky but it does provide a lot of warmth. I’ve done mine in a tan but in grey or purple it would also look amazing.

Soon (fingers crossed) the world will be past this crisis and able to venture out again with friends and family around. And I, for one, will enjoy time spent with mine around a crackling campfire with the cozy oversized crochet cardi wrapped around me!

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– The stitch count for this oversized crochet cardi project is given in parentheses ( ) at the end of each row
– This cardi is meant to be a roomy fit, thus the 2 patterns covering 4 sizes
– This project is made in 6 pieces and assembled before the final collar is crocheted on (1 x back piece, 2 x front pieces, 2 x sleeves, 1 x bottom hem then add final collar)
– When working ribbing (sleeves, bottom hem or neckline) the last stitch in a sequence of SCBLO’s should always be just a regular SC through both loops as usual which makes a cleaner edge.
– Instructions are given first for the S/M size pieces and then for the L/XL pieces and the assembly for ALL sizes is at the end of the document

ASSEMBLY for ALL SIZES OF THIS OVERSIZED CROCHET CARDI:

Seam sides together:

  • Place your back down with the wrong side facing down (right side facing you)
  • Place your 2 side panels with the wrong side facing up toward you (right side facing in) and make sure that for each panel, the FOUNDATION CHAIN ends of the panels face each other toward the cardi opening and the LAST ROW you crocheted is what will be seamed on the sides
  • Measure (S/M: 5.5” & L/XL: 7.5”) from the shoulder down and mark it with a stitch marker, this will be your sleeve hole
  • Whip stitch (or a seaming of your choice) the sides between the bottom and your sleeve stitch marker then fasten off your yarn
  • Repeat on both sides

Attach sleeves:

  • Fold your sleeve in half with the wrong side facing out
  • Cut a length of yarn long enough to seam the under-side of the sleeve but also to continue seaming around the sleeve hole in one continuous seam
  • Starting at the ribbed end of your sleeve, whip stitch the under-side and once you reach the end, place the sleeve with the seam facing down against your arm hole and align it
  • Continuing with your yarn, whip stitch your sleeve to the main body of the cardi circling back to where you started and fasten off your yarn
  • Repeat on both sides/sleeves

Attach bottom hem:

  • You can turn your cardi right side out now and turn out the sleeves
  • With the inside of the card and the wrong side of the hem facing you, whip stitch the hem to the bottom of the cardi (approx. 1 ST per row of the ribbed hem)

Neckline Ribbing:

  • Now to finish off the sweater, with the sweater facing right side out, SCBLO the entire neckline from the bottom of one side, up around the neck and down the other side for 22 rows – don’t forget the last ST of a row is always a normal SC through both loops instead of a SCBLO.
  •

Weave in all ends and Voila!

OPTIONS:

  • You could place buttons on the oversized crochet cardi if desired, just make button holes in the neckline ribbing on your desired side and at the desired intervals
  • You could create a waist tie for the cardi if you like, I would suggest doing about 7 or 9 rows of SCBLO on a CH of 330 or so, but this is an easily customizable thing
  • You could have a deeper neckline ribbing by continuing past the 22 rows in my pattern, if desired and if you have enough yarn
