The holidays are fast approaching and I wanted to give you another fast crochet hat and scarf set pattern that can work up as a last minute gift. The Sherwood Set is a great pattern if you’re looking for an incredibly quick make and to use up some of that deliciously squishy chunky yarn I KNOW you have in your stash!

crochet hat and scarf

This Sherwood Set uses all my favorite simple stitches – Moss/Granite/Linen Stitch combined with Berry Stitch to create the faux bobble lines in the scarf and hat. The chunky yarn I used, which is Loops & Threads Charisma (a Cat 5 yarn) in the color Forest, makes this work up in just a few hours. This is an all-around simple project that can be completed in an evening.

I love this color but I can’t wait to make another set in White, I just think it will look so blissful and pure for my winter-wear. What color will you make it in?

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– For this fast crochet hat and scarf set, you must have knowledge of: working in the BB of the foundation chain, single crochet, single crochet in the back loop (for hat ribbing), Moss Stitch (aka Granite Stitch, Linen Stitch) triple crochet, seaming.
– The stitch used for the texture of this fast crochet hat and scarf set is the Berry Stitch, which is alternating SC and TC so that the SC pulls down the height of the TC and makes it pop out like a little faux bobble.
– With the exception of the 1st and last rows on the scarf, and the 1st row of the body of the hat (which are in plain SC), and excepting the rows of Berry Stitch, the remainder of the body of the scarf and hat are done in Moss Stitch.
– In order to make your TC pop out, you must pull the following SC quite tight.
– The stitch count is given in parentheses ( ) at the end of each row.
– All terms are in US / North American terms.

“Sherwood” Fast Crochet Hat & Scarf Set – HAT PORTION:

We start by making the ribbing side –to-side, seam it together and then create the body of the hat working from the bottom up.

CH 6 + 1 to turn

Ribbing Row 1: Starting in the BB of the 1st CH, SCBLO x 5, SC (through both loops), CH 1  & turn (5)

Ribbing Row 2: Starting in the 1st ST, SCBLO x 5, SC (through both loops), CH 1 & turn (5)

Ribbing Rows 3 to 40: Repeat Ribbing Row 2 (5)

Once you have completed Ribbing Row 40, CH 1 and turn your work 90* to the right so it’s length runs horizontal.  You will now work the body of the hat along the SIDES of the ribbing.

Hat Row 1: in the 1st side row of the ribbing, work SC in each row (ST) across for 40 ST’s, CH 1 & turn (40)

Hat Row 2: Starting in the 1st ST, do a SC, then TC, then SC then TC alternating SC and TC across the row except the last 2 ST’s of the row should be SC. **Note that all your TC’s will go in the ‘hole’ of the Moss/Granite/Linen ST from the row below**, CH 2 & turn (40)

Hat Row 3: Starting in the 2nd ST from your CH 2, do Moss/Granite/Linen Stitch across the row (which means you will SC in each even ST, then CH 1 & SK the odd ST’s), CH 2 & turn (40)

Hat Rows 4, 5: Repeat Hat Row 3 (40)

Hat Row 6: Repeat Hat Row 2 (40)

Hat Rows 7, 8, 9: Repeat Hat Row 3 (40)

Hat Row 10: Repeat Row 2 (40)

Hat Rows 11, 12, 13: Repeat Hat Row 3 (40)

Hat Row 14: Repeat Hat Row 2 (40)

Hat Rows 15, 16, 17, 18: Repeat Hat Row 3, except at the end do not CH but instead, YO, pull through and tie off with a 15” tail. (40)

*** Turn your hat wrong side facing out and line up your seams.

*** Using a tapestry needle, weave the tail in an out of each ST across the top of the hat to cinch up the top.  You can secure this with a knot if you like, as we will continue using that tail to seam down the side.

*** Once you have cinched all the way around the top, continue with your tail and tapestry needle and seam (using a seam technique of your choice) along the side of the work and all the way down to the bottom of the ribbing.

Affix a pom pom of your choosing.  I used a pre-made faux fur pom pom which affixes with a button so that you can remove it when you wash the hat.

Weave in all ends and VOILA, a cozy and hygge fast crochet hat and scarf set that works up lightening quick with chunky yarn!
