“WENONAH” FILET CROCHET SUMMER TOP
A while back, I mentioned that I have a lot more filet crochet projects to come and this Wenonah Filet Crochet Summer Top is the one which kicks it all off!

As we are now mid-June, this is the perfect time to work on a few light-weight summer projects. Sleeveless, frilled, cropped, what ever it may be, we love these summer staples.
The Wenonah, while being a filet crochet summer top, is also a modern take on filet. When I think of filet, I usually think of feminine and frilly, but this top is streamlined with the lacey stripes alternated with solid stripes. I kept the stripes running vertically to elongate and I think it works wonderfully.
The yarn I used is a 3wt (Bernat Softee Baby) acrylic and while normally a cotton or cotton blend would be a better choice for a summer top, the airiness of this filet crochet summer top keeps the air flowing through it so it isn’t too hot. And while it’s a 3wt, it behaves more like a 2wt which also helps to keep it lighter.
The construction of this piece is simple as it is made with 2 panels seamed at the sides and shoulders. Then two finishing rounds are put around the neck, arm holes and bottom. So this is a seriously quick project! It is also a project you can customize easily, turning it in to a dress if you like. I heart that so much.

| – Must have knowledge of: filet crochet (skipping stitches and leaving a space), double crochet, seaming, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet. – This filet crochet summer top is made in 2 panels from the bottom up and is seamed together at the sides and on top of the shoulder. A few finishing rounds are put on after assembly. – The pattern of the filet stripes on this crochet tank top go like this, where O’s are skipped stitches and chains, and the I is a DC: O I O I O I O III – There are always 3 DC’s in between the filet stripes. – Each size just includes another “set” of the stripes to add width. – The CH 3 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch. – The pattern will be written in size XS with the remainder of the counts for the other sizes in parentheses ( ) after. – The stitch count for this crochet tank top is given in parentheses ( ) at the end of each row. |

Front and Back Panel of the Wenonah Filet Crochet Summer Top (make x 2):
CH 63 + 3 to turn (73+3, 83+3, 93+3, 103+3, 113+3, 123+3, 133+3, 143+3)
Row 1: Starting in the BB of the 4th CH from the hook, DC in each of the next three BB Chains then repeat the following pattern of ST’s to the end of the row finishing a DC in each of the last 3 ST’s [CH 1/SK ST, DC, CH 1/ SK ST, DC, CH 1/SK ST, DC, CH 1/SK ST, DC, DC, DC], CH 3 & turn (63, 73, 83, 93, 103, 113, 123, 133, 143)
The pattern for the XS looks like this and each subsequent size up just adds another ‘set’ of the stripes (O’s are skipped stitches and chains, and the I is a DC):

For XS repeat row 2 to a total of 30 rows
For S & M repeat row 2 to a total of 32 rows
For L, XL & 2XL repeat row 2 to a total of 40 rows
For 3XL, 4XL & 5XL repeat row 2 to a total of 44 rows
**Here we will cut in for the arm holes of the filet crochet summer top***
– YO, tie off and cut your yarn (for all sizes)
– Count in 10 ST’s on either side of the panel and mark them with stitch markers (for all sizes) – These should be the 1st DC of a set of 3 on either side, just for reference.
Arm Hole Row 1:Tie on in that marked 10th ST and CH 3, (your first ST will also go in this ST) and continue the pattern of filet stripes [CH 1/SK ST, DC, CH 1/ SK ST, DC, CH 1/SK ST, DC, CH 1/SK ST, DC, DC, DC] across the row, CH 3 & turn (45, 55, 65, 75, 85, 95, 105, 125)
Arm Hole Row 2: DC in the first 3 ST’s then repeat the following pattern of ST’s to the end of the row finishing on a DC in each of the last 3 ST’s [CH 1/SK ST, DC, CH 1/ SK ST, DC, CH 1/SK ST, DC, CH 1/SK ST, DC, DC, DC], CH 3 & turn (45, 55, 65, 75, 85, 95, 105, 125)

Assembly of the Wenonah Filet Crochet Summer Top:
– Once you have 2 identical panels, place them together so that the right sides are facing in to each other and the wrong sides are facing out.
– Tie on at the top of the arm holes and seam down the sides.
– Count in 10 ST’s at the shoulder and seam in 10 ST’s on either side (or more or less if you prefer)
– Turn your work right side out.
Finishing Rounds of the Wenonah Filet Crochet Summer Top:
– Tie on at the bottom of one of the sides seams and, starting in that same ST, SC all the way around, SL ST back to your first ST, CH 1 and then do SL ST all the way around, SL ST’s back in to your first SL ST, YO, tie off and cut.
– Tie on each of the arm holes at the top of the side seam and repeat the same sequence as above for the bottom hem of your top. Remember that you will need to do 2 ST’s for each DC when doing the sides of the arm holes.
– Tie on at the middle back of your neck hole and repeat the same sequence as above for the the bottom hem and the arm holes of your top.
Weave in all ends and VOILA, you have a beautiful filet crochet summer top that will be a new staple in your wardrobe!
