Welcome to my first post of 2024 where I’m introducing this very beginner-friendly one-piece crochet sweater I’m affectionately calling the Susan Sweater. Inspired by my sister-in-law, Susan, this sweater has great style with the horizontal lines of the stitches and loads of comfy vibes!

I hope your holidays were as good as mine, first of all! That being said, mine were busy. As such, I haven’t had much time for crocheting since mid-November so I wanted to keep my first design of the new year fairly simple and beginner-friendly.

Using an easy one-row repeat of SC in the FLO (front loop only) I was able to add great horizontal texture to the piece and, since it’s made as just one continuous piece, that horizontal texture continues across the sleeves and adds some extra interest with a seamless shoulder.

I loved this Red Heart Comfort yarn in the color Denim Fleck (it’s discontinued but you can still find it places, or you could use any other Category 4 yarn) and I wanted to use it for something that said “casual and cozy”. I think this design and yarn choice fits the bill.

The customization options are plenty with this piece. I kept the sleeves as 3/4 but you can certainly make them full-length by adding more foundation chains when you get to the sleeve portions. You can also easily adjust the length of the sweater (the pattern sits just below waist length) by adding more rows before and after the sleeve portions. You can also make the neck wider for an off-the-shoulder look with some simple math.

My favorite part about this single-piece crochet top is that it is made in just 1 piece! The only assembly you need to do is to seam from each sleeve cuff, through the armpit and down to the bottom hem. I’ve added a few finishing rounds on the cuffs, neckline and hem but you could leave it or you could add ribbing instead if you like.

I hope you enjoy making – and wearing – this one-piece crochet sweater as much as I have. Easy peasy and keeps you comfy in style, what more could a hooker want?

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– For this one piece crochet sweater, you must have knowledge of: working in the BB of the foundation chain, slip stitch, tying on to add stitches, tying off, single crochet in the front loop only, seaming.
– This single piece crochet top is made as one complete piece with a neck hole and then the sleeves and sides are seamed together.  There are no seams at the shoulders.
– The SCFLO is a simple stitch, it is just single crochet through the front loop of the stitch instead of through both loops.
– Turning CH’s do NOT count as stitches. – This single piece crochet top is easily adjustable in terms of body length or sleeve length.  To add to the body, simple continue adding rows before and after the sleeve rows.  To make a full-length sleeve, simply add more chains on either side when you tie on for the sleeve rows. – The stitch count is given in parentheses ( ) at the end of each row.

Susan One-Piece Crochet Sweater – Assembly & Finishing:

– Fold your sweater right side in/wrong side facing out and line up your sleeves and sides

– Take an approx 4’ length of yarn and your tapestry needle and whip stitch (or any seaming stitch of your choosing) from the sleeve cuffs through the armpit and down the sides to the bottom.

– Turn your sweater right side facing out, find the middle ST in the back of the neck hole (it really doesn’t matter what side it’s on, to be honest) and SC in each ST around – then without joining, continue in a spiral with a SL ST BLO around the neck hole.  Here is where we tie off, which you can do normally or you can see this note below

– Note: For a cleaner tie off, when you complete the last ST, drop the working loop off your hook, push the hook back to front through the two loops of the next stitch, pick your working loop back up and pull it through to the inside of the neck hole, then tie off normally.

– To finish the sleeve cuffs, tie on at the seam of each sleeve and repeat what you’ve done for the neck hole (1 round of SC followed by 1 round of SL ST BLO as a spiral)

– To finish the bottom your sweater, repeat what you’ve done for the neck hole and sleeve cuffs 1 round of SC followed by 1 round of SL ST BLO as a spiral)

VOILA, a simple yet versatile One-Piece Crochet Sweater you’ll want to make in a few colors this cold-weather season!
