The Mariposa Summer Sweater

After a very lengthy incubation period, I’m so excited to finally put this adorable butterfly filet crochet sweater, the Mariposa Summer Sweater, out there for you all to see!

I’ve actually had this project completed for quite some time, but had difficulty finding the time to write the pattern and take the pictures. You know, lack of time to work in the age of Covid-19. Maybe, in the end, the delay was a blessing because I get to share it at just the time when the magic of the butterflies is in full swing, a supreme inspiration.

I adore butterflies and we’ve planted our garden (and renovate it yearly) to try to attract more butterflies and bees and various other species of insects. What says summer time more than those graceful little creatures? That’s why I knew I wanted a cute filet crochet sweater with a butterfly and a lot of boho vibes.

If you’re familiar with filet crochet, this should be an easy sweater. If you aren’t familiar with filet, this may be a good and easy project to start with. Essentially, filet crochet is just a series of holes and solid blocks using double crochet, so the work is really in keeping track of where you are in the chart and very little else πŸ™‚ If you need guidance on filet, there is no shortage of videos and tutorials online to help you out.

I chose a # 2 light weight yarn (Premier Cotton Fair) as I love how thin and airy this yarn can be. The Cotton Fair yarn is a cotton and acrylic blend, so there’s a little give, good drape but not a lot of stretching. Stretching and filet don’t mix so well, haha!

This oversized fitting boho butterfly filet crochet sweater features an off-the-shoulder or wide boat neck and 3/4 sleeves. You’ll love making this project and love wearing it even more.

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– This boho butterfly crochet sweater is done in filet style and as such, the pattern is explained in terms of holes and solid blocks.  Mostly we will count the holes, since it’s easier to count than the individual stitches themselves
– When referencing the graph for the butterfly portion of the sweater, the first solid block will always be counted as 3 stitches, the remaining will be 2
– The CH at the beginning of every row is being counted as the first post stitch
– The stitch count and β€œholes” count will be indicated in parentheses at the end of the rows (in reference to rows that do not have the butterfly filet in them)
– This filet crochet sweater is done as a large rectangle with a neck hole created in the middle.  The sleeves are then crocheted out from the sides at an even interval from either side of middle (middle is where the neck hole is).  The sweater is then seamed down the sleeve, through the arm pit and down the side.  Very simple assembly.
– The butterfly filet is the same size on all sizes in the patterns, adjusting for more or less rows and stitches around the butterfly to make the various sizes.  The butterfly is 28 rows in height and 71 stitches (35 β€˜holes’) in width
