“Moonstone” Crochet Hat
Maybe it’s my rustic sensibilities and maybe it’s just my love of the occasional splash of color, but I love tweed yarns. This beginner-friendly hat, the “Moonstone” is a great use of this delicious tweedy yarn.
I recently indulged in a whole bunch of tweed yarn in several colors in a 6 wt to try out a few cold-weather wearables I could use while walking my daughter to school.
Since the tweed yarns are so beautiful all on their own, I wanted to work with a simple stitch to showcase the yarn. And you know what? I think this simple single crochet in the back loop did just that with the added benefit of almost looking like a tunisian stitch.
I’ve recently worked up quite a few and stashed them in my gift drawer. A drawer that seems to be ever-growing but soon to empty in the coming weeks, I’m sure.
I will soon add a cowl and maybe some mittens to this line if you’re all interested. In the meantime, this 1/2 hour beginner-friendly crochet hat really couldn’t be easier when the stitch and the bulky yarn do all the work for you. Try it out!

INSTRUCTIONS:
CH 40, SL ST to join
Round 1: SC in the the same ST you SL ST (mark this stitch with a stitch marker), SC in each remaining stitch around (40)
Rounds 2 to 15: SCBLO in each stitch around, continuing to move your marker to the first stitch of each round (40)
Round 16: <SCBLO in 2 stitches, SCBLO2tog> and repeat < to > for the round (30)
Round 17: <SCBLO in 1 stitch, SCBLO2tog> and repeat < to > for the round (20)
Round 18: SCBLO2tog for the round (10)
FINISHING:
– YO and pull through and cut a long tail (the tail will be used to close the remaining opening at the top of the hat)
– Turn the hat inside out
– Using your tapestry needle, weave the tail through the stitches of the opening at the top of the hat, pull to tighten and close and tie it off (I split the yarn in to 2 strands, put the tapestry needle back on one of those strands, weave it through another piece of yarn and tie the 2 strands back together for a really secure knot)
– Sew on a pom pom of your choosing – used here are some snap button poms ordered from Amazon
