“Azalea” Crochet Hat and Scarf Set

If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere warm, I’m a little bit envious right now. With two kids under 4 years, I’m very eager for spring and summer and the fun it brings in the back yard. Not that we don’t enjoy winter too, but it’s harder to spend hours upon hours outside with kids that young in the winter time unless you have a super-duper warm crochet hat and scarf set like this “Azalea” set.

But… winter isn’t done with my part of the world yet and even just a few days ago, we had another storm, the biggest of the season so far. So I decided for winter’s last hurrah I was going to try one more winter wear project and came up with this crochet hat and scarf set.

Made with a stunning chunky 5wt yarn, this thick set is given even more texture with a faux bobble. A faux bobble which is easily made with an alternating single crochet and triple crochet.

I opted to use the roving yarn again because I just love the way it looks. In this dusty rose color, it’s a sweet and feminine addition to my winter wardrobe. It would look great in so many other colors though!

crochet hat and infinity scarf

This crochet hat and scarf set is a great one if you’re looking for a quick set for a gift. It can be made in under 3 hours. You can customize the length of the scarf by adding additional chains to the foundation or you can add a yarn pom pom to the hat instead of the faux fur pom pom which I chose to use.

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– For this crochet hat and scarf set, the stitch count is given in parentheses ( ) at the end of each row – Both the hat and the scarf are made as rectangles and seamed together
– The ‘faux bobble’ in this set is made by alternating single crochet and triple crochet in a row so that the single crochet pulls the triple crochet down and pops it out
– It’s really important that, in the rows where you’re creating the faux bobble, you keep the single crochets very tight to make the fake bobble pop out
– This pattern was made using Bernat Roving in 5wt and this is a yarn that requires gentle hand washing.  If  you’re looking for a more durable set that you can wash more often, I suggest using any other 5wt yarn that is not a roving yarn.

CH 23 for the foundation, CH 1 & turn

Row 2: SCBLO 6, HDC3rdL 14, SC 3, CH 1 & turn (23)

Row 3: SC 3, [alternate TC & SC] for 14 ST (ending on a SC), SCBLO 3, CH 1 & turn (23)

Rows 5 to 39: Repeat rows 1, 2, 3, 4 from rows 5 to 39, ending on a row which alternates the TC & SC (see row 3) *do not CH 1 at the end of row 39*

Assembly:

*Note: if you use the roving yarn for this crochet hat and scarf set, I recommend using another 4wt yarn in a similar color to do the seaming, as the roving yarn tends to come apart when pulled too tight – I used a 4wt yarn in white to seam this hat and it is completely concealed.

– Once you’ve completed row 39, yarn over and pull through a long tail (about 16”) and cut it – this tail will be used to seam the side of the hat

– Fold the hat rectangle end to end with the wrong side facing out (inside out) and the banding at the bottom

– Using a tapestry needle, take the tail and whip stitch down the side in each stitch (23)

– Cut another length of yarn of approx. 8” and use your tapestry needle to weave in and out of the stitch sides at the top of the hat and pull tight to close the loop, tie it tight.

– Affix a pom pom of your choosing to the top of the hat
