The Faith Throw

As the air gets colder and the snow is starting to fall, I’ve been dreaming of another cozy chunky crochet blanket under which to hibernate and wait out the rest of my winter months. I had a wonderful idea of another textured crochet throw with a built in border (much like my Sunday Throw) but I reversed it from other blankets I’ve done and made the border the main focus and the body of the blanket is streamlined and simple.

Meet the “Faith Throw”, so-named because it is the last blanket I will design for 2020 and I REALLY have to have some faith right now that 2021 will bring better things in this world.

This textured crochet throw blanket has a deep border and the remainder is done in simple single crochet. Doesn’t it just look so deliciously hygge? A thick crochet lapghan like this to curl up under is just the remedy I’ve been needing lately and is likely the way I’m going to ride out the rest of this year.

As you know, I do like my chunky blankets (like the Collina Throw) and this one is no exception. (Can you blame me? I live in Canada!) I used the beautiful, neutral True Grey by Bernat Softee Chunky. This yarn is so easy to work with and glides so easily on the hook and, most importantly, has a lot of give without stretching like some loose bulky yarns do.

The border stitch here is one I’ve been using a LOT as you can see from some of my other projects on the site – it’s an alternating TC and SC to make the faux bobble pop out. I am loving this stitch combo so much because it adds a tonne of texture without being a yarn eater. Don’t get me wrong, I love the traditional method of creating a bobble but I do sometimes feel like they can be too large for a project and I wanted something smaller that isn’t, like I said, a big yarn eater, especially with a chunky crochet blanket.

This really is a beautiful, simple and elegant blanket that will work in any color and in any room. It’s a quick make so you still have time to whip one up before Christmas!

The best part is, I’ve provided 2 sizes in the pattern, so if you’re pressed for time, the Lapghan is a great idea for a last minute gift.

chunky bobble border of a lapghan
textured crochet throw blanket

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES:

– This chunky crochet blanket is worked with the longest portion (the length) being the starting chain and the rows determine the width, so it essentially worked side to side rather than top to bottom.

– The blanket has a built-in bobble border, there is no border added after the fact.

– In the first row the turning chain does NOT count as a stitch, but with all other rows, the turning chain DOES count as a stitch

– When working all rows but the 1st row (mentioned above), and since your turning CH counts as the first ST, always skip the 1st ST from your turning CH and crochet your last stitch in every row in to the turning CH/CH1 from the row below.

– The bobble border in this chunky crochet blanket is created by alternating TC and SC and the SC after each TC pulls the TC down and pops it out – as such, try to keep the SC’s after your TC’s quite tight to make the TC’s pop out.

– For the remainder of the SC’s across your row that are not in the bobble border portion, try to keep them quite loose. – Stitch count for each round will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the row
