The Jessen Super Scarf

Wow, where did September go? I can’t believe how fast it’s whizzed by. Between organizing life in general and organizing for my daughter’s online JK (which is a whole other can of worms) I lost track of time. That’s ok, because now it’s time for fall and winter wear! I am, perhaps, a little too eager to be breaking out some of the thicker yarns, the larger hooks, the warmer colors and the coziest patterns yet, especially for this thick oversized scarf, The Jessen.

For this project, I wanted to keep things simple, beginner-friendly but with a lot of style. I’m working on some bigger pieces right now that will be coming to you soon and needed to do a quick and easy project in between to keep things fresh. That’s why I’ve come up with this REALLY easy but oh-so-squishy and comfy Jessen Super Scarf. It’s all the pumpkin spice and fall colors rolled in to a scarf form.

I’ve used the Lemon Peel stitch for this scarf, which is such a simple stitch. It alternates single crochet and double crochet to create a beautiful, yet subtle texture. In this #6 super bulky yarn, the texture of this thick oversized scarf looks more stunning, I think, than it does with a thinner yarn. And, if you’ve noticed, for things like scarves and blankets, I tend to prefer using stitches that are reversible so that either side looks like the right side (like my Chelsea Super Scarf, Sunday Throw or Collina Throw).

Topped off with some lengthy fringe, this chunky super scarf is the ultimate cozy warmth and modern style. It would look great without fringe too, but I really do think the fringe adds that extra bit of interest. Some wrapped bulb fringe or pom poms could look adorable too.

I hope you enjoy making this easy scarf to wear about in this crisp fall weather. I know I will… fall is my FAVORITE time of year 🙂

PATTERN & SIZING NOTES:

– You must be familiar with working in to the back (or bottom) bump of your foundation chain.  If you aren’t familiar, there are lots and lots of video tutorials online.  It’s not difficult, it just means working in to the bottom bump on the wrong side of your foundation chain.  This will help both sides of the scarf to look symmetric.

– The stitch used for this scarf is the Lemon Peel stitch, alternating SC and DC across a row. – Stitch count for each round will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the round

FRINGE:

If you aren’t familiar with how to affix fringe, there are lots of tutorials online and on YouTube, but here are the guidelines for how I affixed mine

– Place 8 stitch markers evenly across the bottom so you know where your fringe is going – I placed mine in each corner and then every 2 rows roughly

– Find a book about 10” in length – using your yarn, wind the yarn around the book 3 times and remove by pulling it off at the top

– Use sharp scissors to cut all the bottom loops

– Using your crochet hook, push it through from back to front in the hole your putting the fringe in, hook the top loop of the fringe you’re holding and pull it through about 2”

– Slip your thumb and pointer finger through that 2” loop and pull through the fringe tails, pulling tightly and evenly

– Once you have all fringe affixed, lay it flat, comb the fringe with your fingers so it all lies straight and use sharp scissors to trip all the fringe straight and evenly and to your desired length

Voila, a gorgeous textured and thick oversized scarf that will keep you warm and cozy all these cold months!
