FOR THE WOMEN

“DIOSA” CROCHET HOODED SCARF – Free Pattern

The Diosa Scarf

Oh how I feel like a bit of a goddess with this sumptuous crochet hooded scarf / scoodie on! The plush, soft, chunky white yarn. The ample oversized style. The fact that I can wear it multiple ways…

I’ve been wanting to do a hoodie or scoodie cowl for a while and I saw one that inspired me to finally make this Diosa Scarf. I like the scoodie long scarves, but I really like how a hooded cowl drapes over my shoulders and can easily be taken off my head and function as a regular cowl instead of how the other style of scoodie looks when you take it off, meaning the hoodie part just falls down your back.

The yarn I used for this hooded cowl is Bernat Softee Baby Chunky in Cream Puff. Not only do I love the color of this yarn but I also love how it’s a little bit fuzzy and almost looks a bit like an alpaca blend. I also love how there is a tiny hint of sheen in the yarn.

The main body of the Diosa hoodie scarf is Moss Stitch, which is a very simple stitch but also one of my favorites because of how it looks. It appears woven or knit more so than crocheted so lends a beautiful and simple texture. The top and bottom of the cowl are done in the ever-gorgeous HDC. The drawstring and pom poms just add a little more whimsy to this simple but stylish crochet hoodie scarf

This scoodie style cowl would really make a beautiful gift for the ladies on your holiday season lists. It’s a quick make, at under 3 hours, and is easy and fairly mindless once you get going because it’s mostly done in a continuous spiral (no seams, yay!)

If you are looking for more quick cowl projects, please take a peek at some of my other patterns like the Lakeridge Cowl and the Stonehaven Cowl or for more traditional scarves, the Jessen Super Scarf or the Chelsea Super Scarf.

PATTERN & SIZING NOTES:

– This crochet hoodie scarf is done entirely in the round (no seams)

– The top and bottom rounds are joined rounds, but the main body of the scarf is done in a continuous spiral

– The top and bottom rounds are done in HDC and the remainder of the scarf is done in a spiral Moss Stitch

– While you *can* use a stitch marker in order to keep count of your rows, it is not really necessary, as I am keeping track of my rounds by lining up from the tail of my starting chain, rather than to mark the first stitch in each spiral round.  The reason for this, is that the 1st stitch will shift as you do more rounds, so it’s better to just line it up with your starting chain join and also to end the last round at that same place, so the starting point and ending point line up.

– For the starting chain, I prefer working in to the *back bump* of the starting chain for aesthetic reasons, but you can work in to the top look too, if you like.

– Stitch count for each round of this scoodie cowl will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the round

INSTRUCTIONS:

SCARF;

Using an 8mm hook, CH 100 and SL ST back in to the 1st ST in the starting chain (be sure not to twist the starting chain at all) and CH 2 (this CH 2 will now count as a ST and you’ve now got 101 ST’s)

Round 1: (joined round) HDC another ST in to the same ST as your CH 2 and then HDC in each ST around, SL ST to the top of your beginning turning chain (101)

Round 2: (starting our spiral work) CH 2, SC in 3rd ST, (CH 1 & SK ST then SC in the next ST> and repeat < to > for the round (101)

Round 3: Once you’ve reached the end of Round 2, you should have a CH 1 on your hook – at this point, SC in to the first ‘space’ from the beginning of round 2, then <CH 1 & SK ST then SC in the next ST> and repeat < to > for the round (101)

Rounds 4 to 61: repeat the pattern of <CH 1 & SK ST then SC in the next ST> for rounds 4 to 61 (or until the scarf is about 18.5” in height) and end your round so that it lines up with (over top of) the tail from your starting chain at the bottom of the scarf – SL ST in to that lined up stitch & CH 2 (101)

Round 62: HDC in each and every ST around, including the stitches and the CH spaces, so that you have 101 ST’s, SL ST in to the top of your CH 2 at the beginning of the round (101)

TIE OFF and weave in your ends

DRAWSTRING:

– Using a 5mm hook, CH 120 (or to your desired length) and tie off, cut.

– Find the front center of your scoodie cowl and, using a tapestry needle on the tail of your drawstring, begin to weave the drawstring in and out of the HDC posts on the top border until you nearly meet up with the other side (I ended up with 2 HDC posts empty in between my 2 drawstring sides)

POM POMS:

Using a 2” pom pom maker, make 2 pom poms and tie on to the ends of your drawstring, trim ends and Voila, a truly elegant crochet hooded scarf you will enjoy for many years to come!
