FOR THE KIDS

CROCHET BABY BLANKET & HAT – Free Pattern

I am excited to be introducing the Breckyn Crochet Baby Blanket & Hat Set on my blog because you just have to know there’s a baby inspiring it! I’m looking so forward to giving this gift to a friend who is expecting in a few short months 🙂

As always, I kept this crochet baby blanket & hat set gender-neutral. It is also reversible because it’s the same stitches on either side. The easy and simple Lemon Peel Stitch makes up the main body of the blanket and hat, and an easy ribbed border and cuff is added at the end.

I’m rating this as advanced-beginner because the Lemon Peel is such an easy stitch, but the border is for those who are more advanced as it requires joining via slip stitches as you work, and placing your joins by eye as opposed to by counting stitches. But never fret, you can go borderless on this blanket if you want, and keep the hat cuff-free as well.

This Breckyn Crochet Baby Blanket & Hat set makes a standard 40″ x 40″ blanket and the hat is appropriate for a newborn up to about 8-10 months given the positive ease in the yarn & stitches.

I hope you enjoy making this set as much as I did for any new additions in your life!

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– This crochet baby blanket and hat set is worked bottom to top on the blanket and top to bottom on the hat.
– The CH’s at the beginning of each round DO NOT count as a stitch.
– You must know Lemon Peel Stitch (SC, DC, SC, DC etc, alternating between these two stitches across a row).
– Each row of the body of the blanket starts with either a SC or a DC and alternates each row. – The border portion of the crochet baby blanket & hat set is worked as HDCBLO to make a ribbing, and is worked perpendicular to the body of the work and joined by SL ST as you work.
– For the border portion of this blanket, I’m not counting rows and your placement may be dependent on how tight your tension is with the body of the blanket – use your eyes as your guide and place your joining SL ST’s where they seem to fall and feel right, just be consistent in where you place them as you go.  If it ripples, you’re placing them too close and if it puckers, you’re placing them too far apart.
– Stitch count for each round will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the row
INSTRUCTIONS
CROCHET BABY BLANKET:

CH 102 (101 + 1 to turn)

Row 1: Working in the BB of the foundation chain – in the 2nd CH from the hook, LP stitch across the row starting and ending on a SC. (this means you alternate [SC, DC, SC, DC, SC etc], CH 1 & turn (101)

Row 2: LP stitch across the row starting and ending on a DC (this means you alternate [DC, SC, DC, SC, DC etc], CH 1 & turn (101)

Rows 3 to 94: alternate the repeat of Rows 1 & 2 so that all your odd rows start & end with SC and all your even rows start & end with DC, at the end of row 94, CH 7 instead and see border instructions below (101)

Borders:
– Now that you have a CH 7, we will begin the HDCBLO portion all the way around the edge of the banket.
– In the 3rd BB of the foundation CH of 7, HDC in all 5 ST’s down toward the body of the blanket.  When you reach the body, SL ST in to the same ST you chained from, then SL ST in to the next ST as well, CH 1 & turn then work your HDCBLO back up the border ribbing.
– For the HDCBLO along the top & bottom edges of the blanket with stitches (as opposed to the sides of the body of the blanket) you will SL ST in to the next ST, and SL ST in to the next ST again and CH 1 & then HDCBLO back up the border, but for the border along the ‘sides’ of the blanket, you will place your 2 SL ST’s where it looks like they need to fall.  You will have to use your judgment on where to place the SL ST’s as long as the placement falls consistently.
– Once you reach the end of each side of the border, start again with the CH 7 and in the 3rd BB of the foundation CH of 7, HDC in a 5 ST’s down toward the body, then continue the HDCBLO across that side.

After completing the last side of the HDCBLO border, YO, pull through, tie off & weave in ends.

CROCHET HAT:

CH 36 (35 + 1 to turn)

Row 1: Working in the BB of the foundation chain – in the 2nd CH from the hook, LP stitch across the row starting and ending on a SC. (this means you alternate [SC, DC, SC, DC, SC etc], CH 1 & turn (35)

Row 2: LP stitch across the row starting and ending on a DC (this means you alternate [DC, SC, DC, SC, DC etc], CH 1 & turn (35)

Rows 3 to 13: alternate the repeat of Rows 1 & 2 so that all your odd rows start & end with SC and all your even rows start & end with DC, at the end of row 13, CH 7 instead and see ribbing instructions below (35)

Ribbing:
– Now that you have a CH 7, we will begin the HDCBLO portion for the ribbing/cuff of the hat.
– In the 3rd BB of the foundation CH of 7, HDC in all 5 ST’s down toward the body of the hat.  When you reach the body, SL ST in to the same ST you chained from, then SK ST and SL ST in to the next ST, CH 1 & turn then work your HDCBLO back up the border ribbing. (we are doing a SK ST in between the SL ST’s here to tighten the ribbing up a bit more than the body of the hat)
– Continue all the way across the bottom of the hat with the ribbing and at the end, YO, pull through and cut a LONG tail so that you can seam up the hat and cinch/close it up at the top.
– Using a tapestry needle, seam up the hat, weave in/out of all the stitches along the top and pull tight to cinch and close the top of the hat.
– Affix a pom pom of your choosing to the hat AND fold up the ribbed edging of the hat!

** Voila, an adorable and gift-worthy crochet baby blanket & hat set ready for your next baby shower!
