“BELLE” CHUNKY CROCHET BOBBLE BASKET – Free Pattern

The Belle Bobble Basket

Who isn’t loving bobbles lately? I know they’ve always been around, but they seem to be everywhere lately. And why not? They add a scrumptious texture to nearly any project. So why not use them on a chunky crochet bobble basket too?

If you follow my blog closely, you’ll notice I’ve been using what I call a faux bobble a lot. It’s created by alternating single crochet and triple crochet so that the short height of the single crochet shortens the triple crochet and pops it out like a bobble. I use it on this chunky crochet basket too. It’s not so much that I don’t like doing a true bobble, but I find this bobble is a little smaller and more subtle and it uses WAY less yarn than a regular bobble which is a plus as far as I’m concerned.

The trick to this technique is to be sure to keep the single crochets that come after a triple crochet very tight so the bobble pops out and stays in place. In the instance of this crochet bobble basket, it also adds some stability and rigidity to the sides which you want because, hey, it is a basket. The sides of the basket will still be fairly soft, but will keep their shape with tight stitches and also because you’re using a smaller hook size than the yarn traditionally calls for.

I wrote the pattern for this chunky crochet basket in two sizes, but this design truly is easy customize. You can choose any number of rounds for the bottom of the basket to customize the diameter of your basket and you can add or subtract as many rows as you like to customize the height.

The best part of this cute squishy, crochet bobble basket is that it is so easy and quick, quick, quick. The small one can be made in an hour and the larger one can be made in under two hours. This is a quick project if ever there was one.

I hope you try this beautifully easy basket, it is a really fun way to add some more texture and hygge to your home decor in any room of the house.

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– This chunky crochet basket is made using joined rounds for the bottom and a spiral for the sides
– The bottom of the basket uses half double crochet and the sides use and alternating single crochet and triple crochet to create the bobble
– For the bottom of the basket, the CH 2 at the beginning of each joined round counts as a stitch
– Between the bottom of the basket (which has an even number of stitches) and the sides, we will drop one stitch so that we have an odd number of stitches to do the alternating bobbles properly in a spiral
– While doing the sides of the basket, try to keep your SC after each TC tight to allow the bobble to really pop out and stay in place – in general, the tension of the sides should be fairly tight to keep the basket sides sturdier but focus especially on making sure the SC after each TC is tight
– This crochet bobble basket comes in 2 sizes, but is easily adaptable by adding/subtracting joined rounds on the bottom, or adding/subtracting spiral rows on the sides
– Stitch count for each round will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the round

SMALL CROCHET BOBBLE BASKET:

CH 3  (we are using the 1st CH as our ring, the other 2 CH’s are the first ST in the round)

Bottom of the Basket:

(worked in joined rounds)

Round 1: In the 3rd CH from your hook (or the 1st CH in the series), HDC x 7, SL ST in to CH 2 at beginning of round (8)

Round 2: CH 2, HDC x 1 in to the same spot as your CH 2, HDC x 2 in to each remaining ST in the round, SL ST in to CH 2 at beginning of round (16)

Round 3: CH 2, <HDC 1 in to the next ST, HDC x 2 in the next following ST> then repeat < to > for the round, SL ST to the CH 2 at the beginning of the round (24)

Round 4: CH 2, <HDC in each of the next 2 ST, HDC 2 in 1 ST> then repeat < to > for the round, SL ST to the CH 2 at the beginning of the round (32)

Round 5: CH 2, <HDC 1 in each of the next 3 ST, HDC 2 in 1 ST> then repeat < to > for the round, SL ST to the CH 2 at the beginning of the round (40)

Round 6: CH 2, <HDC 1 in each of the next 4 ST, HDC 2 in 1 ST> then repeat < to > for the round, SL ST to the CH 2 at the beginning of the round (48)

Sides of the Basket:

(worked in a spiral with a dropped stitch at the beginning – Mark the first ST at the beginning of every round to keep track of your rounds)

Round 1: CH 1, and repeat < to > for the round – once you are back to the CH 1, skip it and continue on so that we have dropped a ST (47)

Round 2 to 8: keep alternating SC & TC marking the first stitch in each round to keep track of rounds, but at the end of Round 8, keep going 10 ST past your marker, which will help level out the sides and we’ll start Rounds 9 & 10 from this new starting point with your marker moved (47 + 10 to the new start)

Round 9: SC in each ST around (47)

Round 10: SL ST in each ST around and when you get back to the first ST, take your hook out of the working loop, push it from back to front through the ST you’re going to join in to, pick up your working loop and pull it through backward so it’s now on the inside of the basket – YO and pull through to tie off  (47)

Weave in your ends and voila!

LARGE CROCHET BOBBLE BASKET:
