TWISTED FRINGE INFINITY SCARF – Free Pattern

“CAMBRIDGE” TWISTED FRINGE INFINITY SCARF

I have been wearing this new Cambridge Twisted Fringe Infinity Scarf since I finished it and have had quite a few compliments on it so far! You know what totally sets it apart? The twisted fringe, of course. It adds a great finesse to the scarf.

It was a scarf I bought about 15 years ago that actually inspired this project. It was open and airy with a well-spaced out fringe, but when wrapped and worn it was actually so cozy and warm. I wanted to achieve that too, with the Cambridge Twisted Fringe Infinity Scarf and I did. It is such a versatile piece that keeps me warm and will work in winter, spring or fall.

The yarn is a Category 4 making it easy to work with. The entire scarf is worked as one continuous spiral without a yarn break — no seams! It requires the simple triple crochet alternated with skipped stitches and chains, so it’s construction and design is simple but with big impact. Added bonus, it works up in just a few short hours.

I hope you enjoy making this twisted fringe infinity scarf as I did. It makes an amazing last minute gift too!

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– This twisted fringe infinity scarf is made as one seamless piece from the top down.  There are no joined rows, just one continuous spiral and the twisted fringe is done along the bottom at the finish without a break of  the yarn.
– If you do not know how to do a TC (triple crochet) you can find lots of tutorials online, but it is just like a double crochet except you are yarning over twice, inserting your hook through the stitch and yarning over twice on the way up.
– There are lots of tutorials online for twisted fringe, but I do give detailed written instructions below.  It may be helpful to watch a video or two online first, however, if you haven’t done twisted fringe before.
– I suggest using a stitch marker so you always know the first ST in a round, but you can visually also just use the tail from your starting chain to know where you are.
– You can customize this scarf by making it longer, just be sure to chain an ODD number in your starting chain. – Stitch count for each round will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the row.

INSTRUCTIONS for this INFINITY SCARF

CH 151 & SL ST to join (be sure to keep your starting chain untwisted)

Round 1: CH 3 and working in all the BB’s of the starting chain HDC in the 2nd CH from your SL ST, CH 1, SK ST, DC, CH 1, SK ST, TC and now repeat [CH 1, TC, SK ST] all the way across the round – do no join, we are working in a continuous spiral (151)

Round 2: As you finished your last TC of the round, CH 1 and place a TC in to the space created by the HDC/SK ST/CH 1 from the row below, CH 1 & SK ST, TC then repeat [CH 1, TC, SK ST] all the way across the round (151)

Round 3 to 14: Continue working the spiral as a repeat of [CH 1, TC, SK ST] across each round and for 14 rounds.  **In order to line up your starting tail with the ending of Round 14, taper down your last 3 sets of ST’s by doing a TC in one space, a DC in the next and an HDC in the last, just as we tapered UP at the beginning of the scarf.  DO NOT tie off, we will continue now doing the fringe (151)

FRINGE:

With your working loops still on your hook and your working ST lined up (approximately) with the tail of your starting chain at the other end of the scarf, we will work the fringe continuously around the bottom of the scarf.  Please note that the fringe is worked in every 2nd ST, which means that you will SC in between each fringe.

– Keep your scarf right side out

– While still holding your working loop and hook, pull your yarn to about 9” in length

– Keeping your hook in the 9” loop, twist the piece on your hook x 25

– Fold your hook back down to the edge and SL ST in to the same ST

– SC in the next ST

– SC in the next ST and do another fringe

– Repeat this across the bottom of the scarf, alternating between a fringe and a SC

– When done, SL ST the last fringe back in to the ST it came from, YO, tie off

Weave in all ends and VOILA, a beautiful twisted fringe infinity scarf that works in winter, spring or fall!
