CROCHET SLOUCHY HAT “HARPER” – Free Pattern

I’m back and excited to bring you an adorable, quick and easy crochet slouchy hat pattern, the “Harper”.

I wanted my first post back, after some time away to take care of some personal business, to be an easy project, something quick and useful. Boy, have I ever found this darling hat useful! I have been wearing it a lot to pick up the kids at school and have had lots of compliments on it.

This crochet slouchy beanie was inspired by the style of a beret, but with the look of a slouchy hat. It can be worn in several different ways, but truth be told, the way I’m wearing it in the pictures seems to suit me best.

I have used a 4wt yarn on this hat, but the slightly airy stitch keeps it feeling light, feminine and appropriate for all seasons, instead of just winter. I could easily wear this on a cooler summer night and not think twice about it.

The stitch used on this crochet slouchy hat is a double crochet cross-over stitch with the brim being single crochet in the back loop. There is a decrease in the double crochet cross-over section near the top, making this an intermediate project, but if you’re an adventurous or highly knowledgeable beginner, you can make this project as well.

The other think unique to this hat is that it is made in one spiral from bottom to top. No seams, just cinching the hole closed at the top. How easy is that?!

I have made a few of these already, in different colors and for different people. It’s just a great piece to keep tucked in your mind for quick last-minute gifts. I hope you enjoy making this adorable crochet slouchy beanie as much as I did!

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– This Harper Crochet Slouchy Hat is made as one continuous piece in a spiral, starting at the brim and working your way to the top.
– Since this is made in a continuous spiral, this pattern will refer to ‘rounds’ instead of ‘rows’.
– Since this is made in a continuous spiral, you will mark the first stitch in each round, but at the end, we will add a few additional stitches to let the top line up with the tail of our foundation chain (since the 1st stitch in the round will continue to drift to the right as the hat progresses).
– You must be familiar with working in the back bump of your foundation chain, Double Crochet Cross-Over, increasing and decreasing.
– Stitch count for each round will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the row
