Yay, it’s fall, my most favorite season of the year! I took some unexpected time off this summer due to family commitments and the death of my father. I needed the time to focus on family. But I’m starting this latest season with a renewed perspective on life and an enhanced love of my art. To be honest, I am so very honored and lucky to be able to share my passion with you all. And I’m starting off the cozy fall patterns with this absolutely stunning chunky crochet lap throw, the “Luna Lap Throw”.
The inspiration from this actually grew out of the yarn. When I saw it, I loved it, it’s soft and squishy in a way I haven’t felt before. I knew I needed to add a new chunky crochet lap throw blanket to my living room this fall. I kept it very simple and streamlined, very minimalist. I knew, however, that the taupe tweed yarn would also add a rustic feel to this chunky crochet blanket, making it a modern piece that will also stand the test of time.
The deep borders on the and bottom are a gorgeous ribbing while the body of the throw is done using Moss Stitch (aka Granite or Linen Stitch). I honestly can’t resist this blanket! I used Loops & Threads Charisma Tweed in Taupe and it is such a wonderfully soft yarn that is sooooo easy to work with.
While this lap throw is on the smaller side just by virtue of being a lap throw, I’ve included the stitch and row measurements so you can easily do the math to make it a custom size of your choice.
If you’re looking for an incredibly quick project with a massive appeal, this chunky crochet throw blanket is just the right piece for your next make. It took me under 10 hours to create and would look super stunning in any color.

PATTERN & SIZING NOTES:
– This Luna Lap Blanket, a chunky crochet throw, is made as one continuous piece with ribbing added on to either end of the blanket. No seaming is required.
– You must be familiar with how to add ribbing perpendicularly right on to a piece. If you are not familiar and require a tutorial on how to do this, please refer to the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM5qMrw8fxY
– The ribbing portion of the blanket uses single crochet in the back loop only, and the main body of the blanket is made using Moss Stitch (aka Granite Stitch or Linen Stitch) but for the purposes of this pattern, I am writing it as SC/CH1/SK ST.
– Turning chains in the ribbing do NOT count as a stitch. Turning chains in the body of the blanket DO count as a stitch, as it always does with Moss Stitch.
– Stitch count for each round will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the row
INSTRUCTIONS:
CH 100 + 1 to turn
Row 1: (for this row only work in to the BB of the foundation chain) in the BB of the 3rd ST from your hook, SC 1, then CH 1 & SK ST, then repeat [SC 1, CH 1 & SK ST] all the way across the foundation chain, ending on a SC in the last BB of your CH. CH 2 & turn (100)
Row 2: SC in the first “space” created by your CH 1/SK ST from the row below, then CH 1 & SK ST and repeat [SC 1, CH 1 & SK ST] all the way across the row, working ONLY in to the empty spaces/holes in the row below. CH 1 & turn (100)
Rows 3 to 65: repeat row 2. At the END of row 65, CH 26 (25 + 1 for turning). We will now start working on the ribbing, which works perpendicular across the top of your blanket.
Top Ribbing Row 1: In the 2nd CH from your hook, SC in the BB only all the way down, SL ST in to the first ST from the top of your blanket, then SL ST in to the next ST as well, and turn your work to work back up the ribbing (no need to CH for turning) (25)
Top Ribbing Row 2: Pass by what looks like 2 ST’s (those are your SL ST’s for joining to the piece) and in what looks like the 3rd ST, SCBLO all the way up EXCEPT in the last ST SC a regular ST through both loops (not in the BL). CH 1 to turn (25)
Top Ribbing Row 3: SCBLO all the way down, SL ST in to the next 2 stitches (not the one the row is in, but the next 2) (no need to CH for turning) (25)
Top Ribbing Rows 4 to 100: repeat rows 2 & 3 all the across the top of your blanket, ending on row 100 and SL ST in, YO and pull through to tie off.
** Place your piece with the right side up and the bottom as your working edge and tie on to the far right of the bottom so we can work the ribbing across the bottom of the chunky crochet lap throw.
** CH 26 (25 + 1 for turning)
Bottom Ribbing Row 1: In the 2nd CH from your hook, SC in the BB only all the way down, SL ST in to the first ST from the top of your blanket, then SL ST in to the next ST as well, and turn your work to work back up the ribbing (no need to CH for turning) (25)
Bottom Ribbing Row 2: Pass by what looks like 2 ST’s (those are your SL ST’s for joining to the piece) and in what looks like the 3rd ST, SCBLO all the way up EXCEPT in the last ST SC a regular ST through both loops (not in the BL). CH 1 to turn (25)
Bottom Ribbing Row 3: SCBLO all the way down, SL ST in to the next 2 stitches (not the one the row is in, but the next 2) (no need to CH for turning) (25)
Bottom Ribbing Rows 4 to 100: repeat rows 2 & 3 all the across the top of your blanket, ending on row 100 and SL ST in, YO and pull through to tie off.
– Weave in all your ends and voila! You have created a gorgeous, sumptuous and modern chunky crochet throw for yourself or for someone special and your gift list!
