CROCHET BOWL COZY – Free Crochet Pattern

If you’re looking for a really quick weekend make or something for a last minute housewarming gift, this adorable crochet bowl cozy is a great go-to project!

With a 4 year old and a 6 year old, it’s not unusual for their little fingers to get a shock when they touch the side of a hot bowl of soup, stew or chili. As such, they love these little bowl cozies and I love them too, when I’m taking hot things out of the microwave.

I recycled the idea of my Belle Bobble Basket to use the ‘faux bobbles’ in a continuous spiral for the sides of the crochet bowl cozy. The texture of those little numbs actually adds a little more insulation between your fingers and a hot bowl, while still looking oh-so-cute and modern too.

This is such a quick and small project that you’ll forgive me for making it such a short post and I’ll get right in to the pattern.

PATTERN AND SIZING NOTES
– This adorable textured crochet bowl cozy is worked as one piece with no seam.  The bottom portion is worked in joined rounds for the circle, and starting at the textured sides it is worked in a continuous spiral.
– The bottom of the crochet bowl cozy uses joined rounds of HDC.  The sides are a continuous spiral alternating between SC & TC (to create the little bobbled texture).
– The bottom portion has even stitch counts for the round, but the textured portion has an odd number of stitches for the round to offset the bobble.
– The CH’s at the beginning of each round count as a stitch.
– Stitch count for each round will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the row
INSTRUCTIONS
CROCHET BOWL COZY:

CH 4, then SL ST in to the first ST to create a circle (or use a Magic Circle)

Round 1: CH 2 (this CH 2 counts as a ST for the bottom of the cozy only), HDC x 9 in to the circle/hole created above.  SL ST in to the top of the CH 2 to join (10)

Round 2: CH 2, HDC another ST in to the same ST as your CH 2, then HDC 2 ST in each ST around. SL ST in to the top of the CH 2 to join (20)

Round 3: CH 2, HDC another ST in to the same ST as your CH 2, then HDC 1 in the next ST, then alternate between [HDC 2 in 1 ST, HDC 1 in the next] all the way around, ending on a single ST.  SL ST in to the top of the CH 2 to join (30)

Round 4: CH 2, HDC another ST in to the same ST as your CH 2, then HDC 1 in the next 2 ST’s, then alternate between [HDC 2 in 1 ST, HDC 1 in the next, HDC 1 in the next] all the way around, but place 1 additional HDC in the last ST of the round.  SL ST in to the top of the CH 2 to join (41)

Here we start the side portion of the crochet bowl cozy, in which we work in a continuous spiral. Your CH 1 starting in Round 5 counts as a ST so that we have an odd number of stitches in the round (41)

Round 5: CH 1 (keep this CH 1 a little more loose than usual as you’re using it as a ST, stitch mark this CH 1), TC in the next ST, SC in the next, then continue alternating between TC & SC across the round ending on a SC in the last ST of the round (41)

Round 6: Placing a TC in the CH 1 from the round below (remember, we’re working in a spiral), alternate between TC & SC across the round (41)

Round 7 – 11: repeat Round 6 (41)

Round 12: SL ST in each ST around and after the last ST, YO, pull through and tie off.   Weave in ends.

** Voila, cute, simple and very, very practical!  This adorable crochet bowl cozy is a must-have in your home or makes a great addition to a housewarming package!
