I do love a good super scarf and I love this “Brighton” Super Scarf because it is simple in design (and beginner-friendly) but also has lots of style. This oversized scarf has been one I’ve been wearing since I made mine and I’m sure I will get so much use out of it this winter!

I kept the design of this oversized scarf simple by using Moss Stitch (aka Linen or Granite Stitch) on the body of the scarf to give it good drape. There is a bit of visual interest added by using a Puff Stitch along the border and I finished it off with one of my new faves, twisted fringe.

Using one of my go-to chunky yarns, Bernat Softee Chunky, gives this super scarf a coziness that can only come from those thick yarns, but you could certainly adjust this to use a 4wt yarn if you prefer. Either way, you will love this addition to your winter wear or giving it as a gift.

PATTERN & SIZING NOTES:

– This Brighton Super Scarf is made as one continuous piece along the long end, then the fringe is added to either end.

– You must be familiar with working in the back bump of your foundation chain, Moss Stitch and Puff Stitch.

– While the majority of this chunky super scarf uses the Moss Stitch, for ease of writing the pattern and so beginners understand how to do the Moss Stitch, I will refer to it as [SC/SK ST & CH 1]

– Turning chains DO count as a stitch, except in the first row.

– Stitch count for each round will be indicated in parentheses ( ) at the end of the row

INSTRUCTIONS:

MAIN BODY OF THE SUPER SCARF:

CH 120 + 1 to turn

Row 1: Starting in the 2nd CH from the hook, SC in the BB of your foundation chain all the way across, CH 2 & turn (120)

Row 2: SK ST in the first ST, SC in the next ST, SK ST & CH 1 and repeat [SC/SK ST & CH 1] all the way across, CH 2 & turn (120)

Row 3: SC in to the first “space” (created by the CH 1 in the row below), then PS/CH 1/SK ST and repeat this across the row alternating between a PS and a SC EXCEPT in the last 2 CH spaces from the row below, place SC’s instead.  CH 2 & turn (120)

Row 4 to 27: SK ST in the first ST, SC in the next ST, SK ST & CH 1 and repeat [SC/SK ST & CH 1] all the way across, CH 2 & turn (120)

Row 28: repeat row 3 (120)

Row 29: repeat row 2 EXCEPT only CH 1 instead of 2 at the end of the row (120)

Row 30: SC in each ST across but do no tie off since we are about to start the fringe along this side (120)

TWISTED FRINGE ON THE SUPER SCARF:

**Note – we are working along the side edge of the scarf now and since our work is SC height, each hole or opening you see is where we will put each twisted fringe using a SL ST

– Turn your scarf so the side edge is now on top as your working edge

– While still holding your working loop and hook, pull your yarn to about 14” in length (for me, this was the length of my arm from thumb to elbow).

– Keeping your hook in the 14” loop, twist the piece on your hook x 25

– Fold your hook back down to the edge and SL ST in to the next hole or ST

– Repeat this for each hole or ST along the edge (you will end up with 30 twisted fringe pieces)

– When done, SL ST the last fringe back in to the ST it came from, YO, tie off and weave in your ends

– Tie on to the other side edge of the scarf and repeat this, making 30 twisted fringes

** Voila!  This trendy Brighton Super Scarf will keep you warm and snug the whole winter through!
